A news conference was held today in anticipation of the Friday, March 14th closing of Kahuku Medical Center's acquisition of Kahuku Hospital. The Hawaii Health Systems Corporation (HHSC) and Kahuku Hospital will complete a $2.9 million transaction made possible by a bill passed by the Legislature last year. In the transaction, facilitated by the Department of Health, the assets of Kahuku Hospital will be acquired in bankruptcy by Kahuku Medical Center, a new non-profit organization established by HHSC, to operate the facility. The facility will be renamed Kahuku Medical Center.
Rep. Michael Magaoay, who represents District 46 including Kahuku, spoke to the media on the importance of saving the hospital for the residents of the North Shore.
Also on hand were left to right: Eric Beaver, Chair of the Kahuku Board of Directors; Senator Clayton Hee; Dr. Chiyome Fukino, Director of the Department of Health; Rep. Magaoay; Tom Driskill, President and CEO of HHSC; and Sheila Toluta'u, RN, a nurse at Kahuku Hospital.
