Keiki Identification Drive in Pearl Kai

Majority Leader Blake Oshiro's October community bulletin for Aiea and Pearl City is now online. One of the upcoming events parents may be interested in is the Keiki ID Drive at McDonald's Pearl Kai for children 12 years old and younger. Keiki must be accompanied by an adult. On the keiki identification card will be a photo, fingerprints and important contact information. The drive, which is being held in celebration of Children and Youth Month, will be on Saturday, October 24 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. You will also find a list of other activities for children and parents that are going on this month.

Representative Isaac Choy's most recent issue of Prevailing Winds is available online. This special edition is a legislative report outlining the accomplishments of the 2009 Legislature.

The following is a message from the Manoa representative:

To this freshman legislator, the words, “sine die” (no further delays) had such a sweet sound. It was a difficult and arduous time, it was survival at best, and I believe it was the best we could have done. Of course, the state budget took center stage this session; although we did balance in the end. For a first experience, I would say, it was “trial under fire”. As the state, nation and world faces very difficult times, we faced a $2.1 billion dollar revenue shortfall at the start of our session and continue to struggle with the gloomy financial forecast. BUT, we will persevere and work to be fiscally responsible and accountable to the citizen taxpayers who entrusted us with this job. Not all the news is dismal, even with the economy in dire straits; we must look to the future, with measures that will ensure affordable healthcare, energy self-sufficiency, improved public education and protecting our environment. I hope you will take some time to familiarize yourself with what has been enacted this legislative session, as it may affect you and your family, friends and neighbors. We must be ready to move ahead as soon as our economy begins an upward swing. I would like to thank you for allowing me to work and serve you these past few months and I hope you will continue to support me so that I may work for and be an integral part of the community and state. Please feel free to contact me at anytime if I may be of service to you. Your trust in me is indeed a humbling experience.

I am excited to share with you the accomplishments of the 24th Legislature. Truly the work of the Legislature was extremely challenging this session with the economic slow down. Thus, the Hawaii Legislature responded to the immediate needs of Hawaii's people while crafting an appropriate budget for the current state economy. The 2008 appropriations take a fiscally prudent approach to enhancing the quality of life for
Hawaii's people by, among other things providing funding to address the aging infrastructure of our public schools and improve University of Hawaii facilities; Facilitating harbor and airport modernization projects and highway improvements; Providing shelter and affordable housing; and Increasing access to health care and
emergency medical services (HB2500). The doors of my office are always open

Already tossed out your state representative's newsletter and forgot to clip that photo of your son and his classmates? Are you a paper snob who only prefers the finest pixeled images on a formatted PDF file?

No stress out. Newsletters from some majority house members can be found in the right panel after "About us" and before "Archives". Click on your Reps name and district to open a PDF version of the newsletter. Thus far we have newsletters for Reps Awana, B. Oshiro, Carroll, Chang, Karamatsu, Sagum, Say, Sonson, and Yamane. We will update the list as newsletters become available.

Each year House majority representatives mail newsletters to their respective constituents informing them of the latest updates from the Legislature, from important bills that have passed out during the session and those that were signed into law to a listing of funds the community will receive for capital improvement projects.

Many of the newsletters also contain vibrant photos of legislators at community events chilling with community members, including the photo above of Rep. Blake Oshiro (the one sporting the lei back row left) with the 2008 Aiea Mustang League Baseball Team at the state tournament on June 28. Oshiro pitched the first ball and thanked community members for supporting team-building activities that benefit youth.
