Konishiki and MMA Champions to speak about underage drinking at a town hall meeting in Waianae

Rep. Karen Awana will bring together Hawaii's most successful sumo wrestling and mixed martial arts athletes to speak at a town hall meeting to discuss preventive measures of underage drinking and ways to lead our keiki in making smart decisions when confronted with alcohol.

Children as young as 13 years old have tried alcohol at least once:

  • In Waianae, about 30 percent of seventh graders said they have tried alcohol, according to a 2003 state Health Department survey.
  • About 25 percent of Nanakuli seventh graders consumed alcohol in the last 30 days prior to the survey, while 42 percent of them said they have used alcohol at some point.
