Legislature 2008 - Day 10 - Grants-in-Aid Cutoff

Today is the cutoff to submit applications for grants-in-aid. The House voted on Day 2 to amend House Rules eliminating the sub-committee for grants-in-aid; applications will go directly to the House Finance Committee. Chair Marcus Oshiro is still considering a public hearing to hear from all the applicants on their respective proposals. In addition, applications will be posted online for public viewing and greater transparency.

...and after a hearing on the applications, then what? The Committee votes up or down on each application?

At the end of the day, the one-person GIA subcommittee may have been eliminated, but I reckon that it only means that instead of Representative Magaoay making the selections/allocations, it will be Chair Oshiro. The FIN committee will then be presented with a single vote, up or down, on Oshiro's edict.

Correct me if I'm wrong.

Doug, Don't know yet as the Chair is still "considering" the public hearing. The intent for greater transparency is sincere. Suggestions welcomed. We'll post something as soon as we hear about a confirmed process.

Actually, I have thought about it, and how to "reform" the system is a problem.

I have heard talk of a public info briefing in March, and the applications will be online soon, but I'm not able to confirm dates with the Finance Chair right now. Will keep folks posted.
