news from The Honolulu Advertiser - Judge Steven Alm has sentenced a 45-year-old man to 5 years in prison and $4,500 in restitution for copper theft. This is Hawaii's first case in which copper theft is considered a felony following the passage of
HB1246 . The new law makes copper theft a class C felony and requires scrap sellers to disclose where and from whom they obtained the metal.
